Formula 1: Christian Horner admits Sergio Perez could leave Red Bull: Sergio Perez after having a great start to the F1 2022 season was awarded by Red Bull a new contract that locks him with the team till 2024, but Christian Horner wants results from the Mexican or he might lose his seat at the Milton-Keynes based team. Christian Horner wants the second driver for Red Bull to be as competitive as Max Verstappen and said, “Well, obviously by taking up that option on Sergio for the next couple of years. It locks out the seat unless he absolutely doesn’t deliver for whatever reason, in 2023, or beginning of 2024.”

“So for somebody like Pierre Gasly, that’s incredibly frustrating, or Alex [Albon] because it’s locked out that seat. What we’ll do is try and assist to keep them in Formula 1 so that we still have the ability to look at their talent and see how that’s emerging. Because Sergio is not getting any younger, he’s 32 years of age now, and this may well be the last contract he signs,” Horner added.

The new contract gives Perez some security, yet he can’t stand to settle for the status quo with any semblance of Gasly and Albon standing ready. Meanwhile, he has had a great run of form this year as he sees himself second in the drivers’ standings with 129 points to his name.
