Liverpool have identified Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement at the club. Jurgen Klopp has been with Liverpool since 2015. He joined the Premier League side from Borussia Dortmund back in 2015. Liverpool fans adore Jurgen Klopp for everything he has done to develop and build the club. Klopp’s current contract, however, ends in 2026, and Liverpool may have to prepare for Klopp’s departure from the club.

Xabi Alonso took over as Bayer Leverkusen’s manager in 2022. He has turned this team into an excellent side in a very short time. Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen is currently at the top of the Bundesliga. They have won 10 of their 11 games so far and are yet to lose in the Bundesliga this season. A significant part of this credit goes to Xabi Alonso. He has transformed how his team plays and is helping his players play beautiful football.

Due to his team’s performances this season, Alonso is already attracting the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the world. Xabi Alonso is currently on Real Madrid’s radar, who are finding a successor for Carlo Ancelotti. All eyes will be on Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen for the rest of the season. Madrid and Liverpool will monitor Alonso to see if he can keep up such performances with his team for the rest of the season.

Xabi Alonso’s agreement allows him to leave the club before his contract expires

Liverpool identify Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso as Jurgen Klopp's potential successor at the club should they part ways with Klopp.

Xabi Alonso has an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen, which lets him leave the club should Real Madrid, Liverpool, or Bayern Munich come calling. Bayer Leverkusen, however, protected themselves by putting a hefty release clause of €18 million on Alonso. Therefore, if Madrid or Liverpool are interested in signing Xabi Alonso before his contract expires in 2026, they must pay Bayer Leverkusen his release clause.

Jurgen Klopp’s contract at Liverpool expires in 2026. This may be perfect for Liverpool, as Alonso’s contract expires in 2026 as well. If Klopp does not sign an extension at the club, Liverpool can target Xabi Alonso without paying his hefty release clause. Liverpool, though, will have to hope that no other club snatches Alonso up before that. If they keep delaying, this opportunity may be passed up ultimately.

Liverpool fans would love having Xabi Alonso as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool. Not only is he turning into a great manager, he is also an ex-Liverpool player. Alonso has won the Champions League with Liverpool and is adored by the fans. It would, therefore, make perfect sense if Xabi Alonso turned out to be Jurgen Klopp’s replacement at the club.

Xabi Alonso’s affection for the club is also very clear. He returned to Liverpool to take part in a Legend’s game last year.

After the game, Xabi Alonso said: “I really loved it and a great cause, great atmosphere, best stadium in the world. Great day. [Anfield is] different. You have pretty stadiums all over the world, great atmospheres, Champions League nights – but this is Anfield. The soul, the stands, the lights, it’s different and it’s pure football. That’s why we love it as a player, as a fan, as anyone that comes.”
