It is Cristiano Ronaldo’s fifth Player of the Month award, having won three successive league titles in his first spell at Old Trafford before leaving for Real Madrid in July 2009, and it is his first since March 2008.

Premier League Player of the Month: That gap of more than 13 years between Player of the Month prizes is the longest in Premier League history.

Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed a dream first appearance on his return to the club, scoring two goals in the 4-1 home victory over Newcastle United. He also netted the opening goal as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team came from behind to win 2-1 at West Ham United. He was unable to prevent United from falling to a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa at the end of September but was judged to have done enough to win the award.

While his performances in Europe were not considered for the Premier League award, Ronaldo scored in the 2-1 defeat away at Young Boys before netting a dramatic winner in the 95th minute of injury time at home against Villarreal in the Champions League.

Premier League Player of the Month: Mohammed Salah may feel hard done by not to have won the award after some scintillating displays for Liverpool, especially after his performance against the defending champions Manchester City. He also scored in three Premier League matches last month, equaling Ronaldo’s tally of three, and contributed more on the pitch.

The Man Utd forward topped a six-man shortlist that also included Joao Cancelo, Antonio Rudiger, Allan Saint-Maximin, Mohamed Salah and Ismaila Sarr.
