Anthony Martial scored the third in the 55th with his first goal of the season when he cashed in on some poor defending to run onto a Casemiro cross at the back post and fire past Johnstone.
The match was the night’s only fixture pitting two top flight clubs against each other and they will meet again in the league at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The Red Devils won the last edition of the Carabao Cup and they would compete for back-to-back titles this season. With three wins and three defeats, they moved to 8th in the table. Erik ten Hag has to carry this momentum as they will face the same side again in the Premier League this week. Man United lost just one game in the last five meetings with the Eagles but they were also held out for two draws.
