With a convincing 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Manchester City reduced the distance to only three points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. Four minutes into the game, City’s defensive midfielder Rodri headed in a cross from Riyad Mahrez from a corner.

Erling Haaland capitalised on a mix-up between Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and defender Calum Chambers in front of the goal, then threaded a pass across the box for Ilkay Gundogan to score into an empty net. City kept up the pressure. Soon after, Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey brought down City’s Jack Grealish for a penalty, and Mahrez converted to make it three.
Forward Ollie Watkins scored the third goal in as many games for the away team in the 61st minute, slipping the ball into the bottom right corner, but the visitors were unable to get back into the game. Just days after the club was accused of more than 100 financial fair play violations, City supporters heckled the Premier League opening song as the teams lined up before the game. The victory maintains City three points behind Arsenal in second place, giving them a chance to catch up to the league leaders when they play on Wednesday. Villa is now ranked eleventh.
Villa never really recovered after allowing Rodri to evade his defender and head past Martinez after just four minutes, though they were maybe unlucky to trail 3-0 at the break following what appeared to be a cheap foul by Ramsey on Grealish. They got better after the break as City seemed to let up, but it was the first time since Steven Gerrard’s replacement by Unai Emery that they lost two straight games, keeping them in 11th place with 28 points.
