The Crown Prosecution Service withdrew accusations of attempted rape, actual bodily harm, and coercive or controlling behaviour earlier this month. Twelve witnesses, including the woman at the centre of the accusations, refused to cooperate, leading to this decision. While the Red Devils conduct an internal investigation, Greenwood is still unable to participate in United’s games or practises.

However, a source claimed: “Mason has spent a long time with very little — if any — contact from the club. As and when they were in touch, it was never direct and always through a third party. So for the manager to call him was a big step for him and one he really appreciated.

“The manager enquired how he was feeling physically and mentally and said he was pleased the charges had been dropped. He thought it was the right thing to do to get in touch with Mason.”

However, it’s been said that the Manchester United women’s players don’t want him to rejoin the team. The Athletic reports that “the feeling is strong” on the team that Greenwood ought to be fired.

According to reports, his teammates in the men’s locker room also feel this same and are divided on whether to welcome him back. Despite the fact that the accusations against Greenwood were dropped, it is believed that the fans are hesitant to welcome him back. Some people have even urged that his contract be terminated.

In March 2019, the gifted striker made his squad debut. Greenwood had a £50 million market value at the time of his arrest.
