Chelsea manager earlier Graham Potter confirmed that Blues medics have been in communication with England personnel on a regular basis, albeit he had not contacted Southgate personally.
Potter said: “Reece was outside having a jog. It is just about how he responds. We know he is pretty optimistic about it — but in this situation you need to be.”

In normal conditions, Chelsea full-back James would have had a good chance of playing England’s 2022 World Cup opener against Iran, but he is the furthest behind in his recuperation.
Walker and Phillips, on the other side, have declared their candidacy. After recuperating from shoulder surgery, the latter, who has only played 14 minutes this season, might make his League Cup debut against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
