Denmark who are placed in Group D along with France, Australia, and Tunisia could be seen sporting this particular jersey in their listed away match on November 30 against Australia. The idea behind this ‘toned down’ jersey is that of the national team’s kit provider, Hummel.

In its official statement, Hummel said: “We do not wish to be visible” in a tournament it claims “has cost thousands of lives. We support the Danish national team but that isn’t the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation.”

Denmark’s primary playing kits are a plain red home shirt and an all-white away shirt but even in those jerseys, the sponsor’s name and the Danish badge, both will be toned down. In fact, Denmark’s training kit sponsors have also decided to withdraw their logos to provide space for messages critical of Qatar.

Qatar’s treatment of migrant laborers has been a global issue in the recent past and there have been calls for boycotting the Qatar World Cup from various corners of the world. It is estimated that close to 30,000 migrant laborers have been used for several projects including building seven stadiums for the tournament in Qatar, as well as a new airport, new metro, and new roads.

According to shocking reports which came out last year, more than 6,500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have died in Qatar since it won the right to host the World Cup 10 years ago.

As a matter of fact, Denmark is not the only country at the World Cup that plan to display signs of protest against the Qatar Government’s workers’ rights policies. England captain Harry Kane plans to wear a ‘OneLove’ armband during the World Cup as part of a campaign started by the Netherlands to promote diversity and inclusion and stand against discrimination.

Other notable countries like Belgium, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Wales, and Switzerland are also supporting the initiative.
