Neymar’s trial will begin in Barcelona on Monday and besides him, both of his parents will face charges of business corruption as their company directly manages his affairs. This is certainly concerning news for Brazil especially because it comes so close to the World Cup, which is scheduled to begin on November 20.

The transfer in dispute happened way back in 2013 when Neymar joined FC Barcelona from the Brazilian club Santos. Neymar, now 30, currently plays for Paris Saint Germain in French Ligue 1 and is one of the highest-paid footballers in the world.

Neymar’s high-voltage transfer to Barcelona has been in dispute since 2015 when investigators began probing the details of the deal after a complaint by DIS, a Brazilian company that owned 40 percent of the player’s sporting rights when he was at Santos.

Barcelona claimed the transfer cost 57.1 million euros, but prosecutors believe it cost at least 83 million euros. Besides Neymar and his parents, there are six more defendants facing trial including former Barca presidents, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, and ex-Santos boss Odilio Rodrigues Filho.

Will the Trial affect Neymar’s availability for World Cup?

Neymar is expected to testify in court but his date of appearance is not officially confirmed yet. As per reports, it could either be on October 21 or October 28

The trial will run until October 31, three weeks before the World Cup begins on November 20, with Neymar set to lead Brazil into their Group G opener against Serbia four days later.

There are slight concerns for obvious reasons but as things stand, Neymar’s participation is not in doubt. Brazil is placed in Group G alongside Serbia, Switzerland, and Cameroon. After their opening encounter against Serbia on November 24, Brazil will face Switzerland on November 28 and Cameroon on December 2.
