Switzerland had an unbeaten group stage run, finishing second in Group A behind Germany. They started strong with a 3-1 victory over Hungary, followed by 1-1 draws against Scotland and Germany.

Italy, the reigning champions, kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 comeback win over Albania but stumbled with a 1-0 loss to Spain in their second match. They concluded the group stage with a 1-1 draw against Croatia, thanks to Mattia Zaccagni’s equalizer deep into injury time.
