In the 45th minute of the game, Newcastle was awarded a contentious spot-kick by Anthony Taylor. In an attempt to clear the ball, Hwang Hee-chan appeared to catch Fabian Schar in the penalty area. Schar toppled over, and a penalty was awarded to Newcastle. A lengthy VAR review featuring various speeds and angles followed this decision, but the penalty stood. This allowed Callum Wilson to give Newcastle the lead just before halftime. Wilson scored to make the score 2-1 in favour of Newcastle United.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer also had a similar take on Anthony Taylor’s decision to award a penalty to the Magpies against Wolves.
Alan Shearer said:
“I didn’t think it was a penalty. I can understand why the referee has given it on the pitch but then they looked at it so many times in the replays and I still can’t see why it wasn’t overturned. If that was given against me, I’d be livid.”
The PGMOL has not offered Wolves a formal apology as they have done in the past following controversial decisions. However, Anthony Taylor has been demoted to the Championship for games this weekend. Taylor will take charge of the match between Preston and Coventry on Saturday instead.
The VAR official, Jarred Gillett, did not face any sanctions for this decision. He keeps his place in the Premier League and will be the VAR official for the game between Fulham and Manchester United on Saturday. He will also be refereeing the game between Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa on Sunday.
