WPL trumps PSL; Islamabad United earn Rs 1.5 Cr less than WPL champs Royal Challengers Bangalore

Compared to the WPL's two-year run, the PSL has been played for the last nine years but has still failed to overtake the women's league in prize money.

Despite being in its infancy, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has completely overshadowed the Pakistan Super League (PSL) when it comes to its prize money. Having started just a year ago, the WPL already pays its 2024 champion, Royal Challengers Bangalore, significantly more than the PSL 2024 winner, Islamabad United.

The two finals, which were played 1089 kilometers apart, saw thrilling finishes. But the players at Islamabad United may not be that excited when they glance at Smriti Mandhana and Co.’s paycheck. Not only the winners but also the runners-up pocketed much more money as well. The Multan Sultans will take home Rs 1.4 crore, but compared to the Delhi Capitals, the sum is meager.

Islamabad United vs Royal Challengers Bangalore: Prize Money Comparison

AwardWPL 2024 (Rs)PSL 2024 (Rs)
Champion5 crore3.5 crore
Runners-up3 Crore1.4 crore
Emerging Player of the Season5 Lakh10 lakh
Batter of the Tournament5 Lakh10 lakh
Bowler of the Tournament5 Lakh10 lakh

The fascinating thing about this comparison is that the PSL offers its players more when it comes to smaller awards. The orange and purple cap holders in the WPL get Rs 5 lakh each. However, that amount is doubled in the PSL. Similarly, the emerging player of the season will pocket Rs 10 lakh in the PSL, while the WPL pays half the sum for the same award.

The biggest disparity is in the winner and runner-up categories. Compared to the WPL’s Rs 8 crore, the PSL awards just 5.9 crore to their finalists. With the Women’s Premier League set to soar further heights, it looks unlikely that the Pakistan Super League will ever come close to the future behemoths.
