Will Ruturaj Gaikwad take CSK to the IPL Playoffs on his first try?

5-time champions, the Chennai Super Kings are looking to make a record-extending 13th IPL Playoff run.

It’s been a stop-and-start season for the Chennai Super Kings so far. They went 2-0 to 2-2 and now have a 4-3 record win/loss record in IPL 2024. Playing under a new leader, Ruturaj Gaikwad, the most successful IPL franchise has yet to find its stride. Despite some ups and downs, they are 4th on the points table and are very much in contention to make the IPL 2024 Playoffs.

CSK on course to make the IPL 2024 Playoffs

As of now, they have played half of their League Stage matches (7) and have just 4 wins (8 points) to their name. Last season, the four teams that qualified had 20, 17, 17, and 16 points, respectively. With 7 games left, the Chennai Super Kings will look to clinch 4 more wins and solidify their position as top contenders for the IPL 2024 trophy.

However, they can sneak through to the playoffs after securing just 3 more wins as well. In the IPL 2021 edition, the Kolkata Knight Riders made the Final Four after scoring just 7 wins (14 points), but given that two more teams have been introduced since, CSK would like to hit that 16-point mark at least.

Home advantage to take CSK to the IPL playoffs?

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side will be returning to their home on April 23, having last played a match in Chennai on April 8. Although they’ll be playing in familiar conditions, they have tough opponents to face. Lucknow Super Giants are one spot below them, and Sunrisers Hyderabad are one spot above them as of April 22.

If they manage to beat one of them and go on to win against the Punjab Kings on May 1, they’ll have 12 points (6 wins) after 10 matches. But things might not be too easy from there either. They are set to face the Rajasthan Royals, a strong contender for the title, twice in their remaining matches. Luckily for them, one of these encounters is at their home, and the two other teams they’ll face are much weaker.
