Mumbai Indians’ (MI) rising star Vignesh Puthur made an unforgettable IPL debut against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), grabbing 3/32 and even earning a pat on the back from MS Dhoni. But just when fans thought MI had unearthed a new match-winner, they dropped him from their Playing XI for the Gujarat Titans (GT) clash. And naturally, that has left everyone wondering—why?
Why have MI dropped Vignesh Puthur?
Despite his heroics, MI went for experience over promise, bringing in Mujeeb Ur Rahman instead. The Afghan spinner’s mystery spin and international pedigree might have tipped the scales in his favor, especially on the Ahmedabad track. Plus, Mitchell Santner kept his place as an all-rounder, meaning MI’s spin slots were already filled.
Having said that, including Mujeeb has also forced MI to bench Will Jacks, too. Jacks, being a hard-hitter at the top, could’ve been an X-factor. However, no he is on the bench as Hardik Pandya makes his first appearance at the IPL 2025. Benching him after just one match seems like a tough call, especially considering MI’s history of backing young Indian talent. But this is the IPL—tough calls are part of the game.
Mumbai Indians (Playing XI):
Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Satyanarayana Raju
Mumbai Indians Impact Subs: Robin Minz (most likely to come in the 2nd inn), Ashwani Kumar, Raj Bawa, Corbin Bosch, Will Jacks
Who is Vignesh Puthur?
In the Kerala Cricket League 2024, Vignesh showcased his bowling skills by taking 13 wickets in 16 matches, with a best figure of 3-38. While his batting contributions have been limited, he has maintained a strike rate above 70. His adaptability and determination have earned him recognition in tournaments like the Tamil Nadu Premier League and TCM KCA Club Championship.
Mumbai Indians scouted Vignesh during his domestic appearances and bought him for ₹30 lakh in the IPL 2025 auction. Earlier this year, he trained as a net bowler for MI Cape Town in SA20 alongside Rashid Khan, refining his skills further. With guidance from top players and franchises, Vignesh could be a star of Indian cricket. He claimed the wickets of Deepak Hooda, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube on his IPL debut.
