Shepherd scored 39 runs off ten balls, hitting three boundaries and four maximums, including a 32-run over against South African Anrich Nortje.

Mumbai Indians (MI) showcased an impressive batting display against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their quest for a maiden victory in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The Wankhede Stadium witnessed a sensational performance by Romario Shepherd in the final over, where he unleashed a barrage of boundaries and sixes, propelling MI to their third-highest IPL total of 234/5.

The Caribbean all-rounder ignited the fireworks with a boundary straight down the ground before unleashing a remarkable hat-trick of sixes. Amidst the spotlight shining brightly on Romario, his fellow West Indies teammate showered him with accolades.

“We actually come from one area coming into cricket, getting to know him and being around him, he’s such a good fellow. Always gives you advice on how to go about your games and, keep training hard and always just continue doing what you do best,” said Shamar Joseph.

“Congratulations. He’s an exceptional player and can hit the ball a long way. So let’s continue good work and enjoy every moment,” Joseph added.

A bond like no other

Despite a five-year age gap, Romario and Shamar share a lifelong bond as childhood buddies and neighbours from the Baracara area of north-eastern Guyana. Their cherished memories are intertwined with the renowned Canje Creek.

It was through Romario Shepherd’s guidance that Joseph ventured into cricket. Shepherd paved the way for Joseph’s entry into the Guyana cricket team, where he crossed paths with Esuan Crandon, the head coach, and bonded with senior Guyanese players, including the then-team captain, Leon Johnson.

Mumbai Indians create historic record

In a historic feat at the Wankhede Stadium, the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, secured their 150th victory in T20 cricket, setting a record unmatched by any other cricket team. With this victory, MI jumped ahead of DC and RCB to eighth place in the league standings, earning their first points of the season.

MI successfully defended their mammoth target of 235 runs, courtesy of blistering performances from openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, supplemented by Tim David and Romario Shepherd’s late blitz. Despite their best efforts, DC could only manage 205/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
