T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav misses out on India’s Champions Trophy squad as Rohit Sharma announces lineup

Having played 37 ODI games for India, Suryakumar Yadav's performances in 50-over cricket have mostly been underwhelming, and now he is out of the India Champions Trophy 2025 squad.

India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav‘s dream of making it into the Champions Trophy squad is over. In a recently held press conference, Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma announced the India squad, and there was no mention of Suryakumar Yadav. For some, it came as a surprise, while for others, it was expected. However, for the latter group, there is much to consider, as Suryakumar’s form in recent times has not been outstanding. For now, his performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy was underwhelming; in the first four matches, he made just 38 runs, with an average of less than 10, showing how poor his outing was as India’s T20I captain.

Stings of a poor run in ODI cricket

It’s also no hidden fact that, if we look at his last two years, his T20I career saw only highs. However, when it comes to ODI cricket, it wasn’t that impressive. Just before the ODI World Cup 2023, Yadav recorded three ducks in a row during the three-match ODI series at home against Australia. Then, in the 2023 World Cup, he made several low scores, in total of 106 runs with an average of 17.67. He failed to make a mark and couldn’t live up to his reputation of making quick runs.

Despite getting extended opportunities in ODIs, having played 37 games and scored only 773 runs in 35 innings, he failed to maintain an average of even 30, reflecting his inconsistency in this format. All these factors, including his recent outing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, could led to his exclusion, and now he is out of the Champions Trophy 2025 squad.
