The India cricket team has announced their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, confirmed that Rohit Sharma will captain the side in Dubai. There are no shocks as far as the batting lineup is concerned with Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul present. As expected, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant have also been included in the 15-man squad.
Concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness, Siraj dropped
Despite injury concerns, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Kuldeep Yadav have been included in the team as well. Among the three, only Shami remains completely fit, while the other two will be monitored by the BCCI medical staff. Mohammed Siraj doesn’t make the team after concerns over his increased workload and criticism over his recent form. Arshdeep Singh has been picked over him, perhaps due to him being a left-arm pacer.
Bumrah won’t feature in the India vs. England ODI series, and Harshit Rana will play instead of him, but he’s been included in the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, and as per Agarkar, he’s on track to be fit for the tournament.
4 spinners picked for Dubai
Four all-rounders have been picked considering the pitches in Dubai. Hardik Pandya will be the lone pace bowler among them while spinners Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar dominate, considering the pitches in Dubai are expected to be spin-friendly.
Sanju Samson misses out
Sanju Samson has also missed out with Pant being picked over him. It’s not a shock, given Samson hasn’t featured in ODIs for India in 2024 and didn’t even play for Kerala in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. What’s rather fascinating that Samson hasn’t even been included in the reserves list.
