T20 World Cup: What happens if rain plays spoilsport in Group stage & Super 8s

Several matches in the ongoing T20 World Cup are expected to get affected by the rain.

T20 World Cup: The England vs Scotland T20 World Cup match played on Tuesday had to be abandoned due to the rain. There is chance of rain over the next few weeks as per the weather aggregators which might affect several games. So, that brings us to the question as to what happens if it rains during T20 World Cup 2024 matches?

Reserve day for T20 World Cup matches

While there is a reserve day only for the first semi-final and the final, none of the other matches, including the group stage and Super 8 will have a reserve day. As a result, rain can play a big part in group stage or Super 8 match results.

Minimum requirement to get a result in T20 World Cup?

As per the rules, to get a result in the group stage and Super 8, a minimum of 5 overs has to be bowled to the team batting second subject to a result not being achieved earlier. So, at least both teams will need to face 5 overs each to determine a result in the first two rounds. But, if the weather or any other interruptions are not very long, the overs are reduced keeping in mind playing duration of the match. The result also will be determined via Duckworth Lewis (DL) method, should the rain interrupt play during the two innings.

Reserve day for semi & final T20 World Cup match

As stated above, there is a reserve day only for the first semi-final and the final match of the ongoing T20 World Cup. To note, the final match of the ongoing T20 World Cup will be played in Barbados on June 29.
