Catch the qualification scenario of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 Group D, involving South Africa and New Zealand.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Group D was dubbed as the ‘group of death’. Two heavyweights in New Zealand and South Africa were the favourites. But the presence of Afghanistan, the dangerous disruptor, added spice. Given the Asian conditions and their resurgence, Afghanistan were backed to cause an upset. UAE and Canada as sides capable of springing a surprise.

All the five teams have played two games each and the picture is clearer now. Afghanistan faltered as a bowling unit against New Zealand before suffering a heartbreak in a double Super Over against the Proteas. New Zealand and South Africa have won both their matches and sit comfortably on four points each. The Black Caps lead the table with a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.919, while South Africa are close behind at +1.425. UAE have two points from two games, while Canada are yet to open their account.

Qualification Scenario for New Zealand & South Africa

South Africa has qualified for the Super 8 stage after Afghanistan beat UAE. They still have one game left and can go 4-0 with momentum. New Zealand needs to win against Canada to confirm their spot. If they lose, it will come down to Net Run Rate. Both teams control their fate and need just one more win from their remaining two games to seal a Super 8 berth.

The head-to-head clash between NZ and SA on February 14 was crucial, and SA’s win has given them an edge. SA’s next game is against UAE, which they are expected to win. NZ, on the other hand, faces Canada on Feb 17. Both teams are likely to qualify for Super 8 unless there’s a massive upset.

Qualification Scenario for Afghanistan

Afghanistan are not out yet but they are hanging by a thread. Rashid Khan’s side passed the first hurdle by beating the UAE and now must win against Canada on Feb 19 , and by convincing margins to repair their NRR. Even then, they need New Zealand to lose their remaining game. So basically, Afghanistan would want Canada to beat NZ again.

If that happens, Afghanistan can finish on four points alongside one of the big two. Qualification would then come down to Net Run Rate.

Qualification scenario for UAE

UAE are on two points from three matches with an NRR of -0.797. They have just one game left — against South Africa (Feb 18). The UAE has a mathematical chance. The route is almost impossible as they want Canada to beat both Afghanistan and New Zealand. That would knock Afghanistan out. That would end the table with 3 teams (NZ, UAE and Canada) with 4 points each. The team with best NRR will qualify.
