T20 World Cup or not? Yuvraj Singh shares when Abhishek Sharma should play for India

Yuvraj Singh, who was recently made the official ambassador for the T20 World Cup 2024, has dissected if India should fast-track Abhishek Sharma in the national team

Former World Cup winner, Yuvraj Singh has discussed when should Abhishek Sharma, who is enjoying a stellar IPL 2024, play for India. Yuvraj has dissected if India should look at the youngster from the upcoming T20 World Cup perspective.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Abhishek has emerged as a breakout star in IPL 2024. One of the highest run-scorer for SRH (288 runs), Abhishek has impressed with his aggressive batting. His strike rate of 218.18 is the best in the league so far among batters with at least 100 runs. However, former Indian legend Yuvraj Singh, who has mentored Abhishek, believes the youngster might need to wait a little longer for his international debut.

Abhishek for T20 World Cup? Yuvraj Singh dissects

Yuvraj acknowledges Abhishek’s talent. “Abhishek is almost there,” he said as quoted by Cricbuzz. However, with the T20 World Cup scheduled for June in the US and West Indies, Yuvraj suggests prioritizing experience in team selection. “For the World Cup, we have to take an experienced side,” he explained. Yuvraj recommends Abhishek should focus on honing his skills for a potential call-up after the tournament. “Coming six months will be very important for Abhishek,” he added. Interestingly, Yuvraj also recently spilled beans on his preferred squad for India for the upcoming T20 mega event.

Yuvraj suggests where Abhishek could enhance his game

Yuvraj Singh, who was recently made the official ambassador for the T20 World Cup 2024, also identified areas for improvement. “He has the ability to play big shots, the big sixes which he has been hitting are very good,” Yuvraj said. However, he emphasized the importance of well-rounded batting.

He has to learn to take singles and know how to rotate strike. He has to learn to play out the bowlers who are bowling well and target other bowlers,” Yuvraj elaborated. This suggests the young southpaw needs to develop his ability to navigate challenging bowling spells and maintain a healthy scoring rate without solely relying on big hits.

The coming months will be crucial for Abhishek’s development. With Yuvraj’s guidance and the opportunity to learn from seasoned players in SRH, the 23-year-old youngster has the potential to refine his skills and potentially don the Indian jersey in the near future.
