It appeared quite odd, the way former India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav was first removed from captaincy, and then completely axed from the side.. from the Ireland and England tours. But after heavy losses it these series’, it seems that the doors on him might not be closed, after all. As per a report in ANI, the 35-year-old can still make a comeback to the national side.
Suryakumar Yadav could make a comeback to Team India
As per a BCCI source, Suryakumar Yadav has not been ruled out completely from making a comeback, and remains in contention, given he performs in domestic cricket. “Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently,” said a BCCI source.
That is only fair, considering he led India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 trophy just a few months back. As for the newly appointed skipper Shreyas Iyer, he remains to register a win as India captain. India lost the Ireland series 0-2, while against England the score line was 0-4. One match in the series was washed out.
Needs to perform in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
Now after the England ODIs, the Iyer-led team will tour Zimbabwe, where a few youngsters will be tried. If the performances don’t come there, who knows, the selectors might have to go back to Surya. This year, Surya has played 14 matches where he has scored 484 runs at an average of 44, and a strike rate of 161. That also includes four fifties.
Interestingly, even former India bowler R Ashwin had suggested something similar. “If Surya shows good form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, then he can surely come back. Captaincy might be difficult right now, but returning as a batter is possible. He has to do well in the SMAT and also in the next season of the IPL. Doors cannot be closed on anyone, but it is doubtful, considering the way he was removed from the team,” he said on his Youtube channel.
Overall, in 113 matches for India, he has scored 3272 runs at an average of 36, with 4 tons and 25 fifties, making him one of the most-feared batters in the format, across the world.
