Smith to McGurk: Stars who missed spot in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad

Some of the prominent names were missing in the Australia's T20 World Cup.

Australia’s T20 World Cup squad was announced on May 1 (Wednesday). While several big guns were included in the Aussie squad, some prominent names were also missing from the team. In this article, we will take a look at some of the stars who missed out on Australia’s T20 World Cup squad.

Stars missing in Australia T20 World Cup squad

Steve Smith

Australia selectors dropped veteran campaigner Steve Smith for the T20 World Cup. Smith, a member of Australia’s title-winning squad at the 2021 tournament in the United Arab Emirates, played T20s against New Zealand in February but was unable to push his claims further after missing out on an IPL contract.

Jake Fraser-McGurk

Australian selectors ignored calls to include Jake Fraser-McGurk in their squad despite the young batsman’s sensational form in the Indian Premier League. Opening for Delhi Capitals, McGurk has given several brisk starts to DC. However, the Men in Yellow have decided to back veteran David Warner for the opening spot.

Jason Behrendorff

Premium Aussie pacer Jason Behrendorff failed to secure his spot in Australia T20 World Cup squad. Behrendorff played his T20I game against West Indies in February this year. The left-arm pacer has scalped 18 wickets in 17 T20I games for Australia.

Matt Short

Just like Behrendorff, Matthew Short also played his last T20I in February 2024. The all-rounder has been a regular member of the Aussie T20 squad in the recent past. Short has played 9 T20Is and has an impressive strike rate of 175.96. The off-spinner also has two wickets to his name but his economy rate 13.8.
