India cricket team captain Shreyas Iyer minced no words in expressing his disappointment after being handed a 125-run thrashing by England in the ENG vs IND 3rd T20I in Nottingham. The Men in Blue lost the opportunity to register their first win in the five-match series as they were bowled out for just 76 runs in the run-chase – their second lowest total in T20Is. India‘s new T20I captain Iyer, who is yet to win his first game as the skipper and has had a terrible run as captain in the recent past, has dubbed India’s performance at Trent Bridge as ‘atrocious’.
Shreyas Iyer baffled by India’s atrocious show
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Iyer said that losing to England by a mammoth 125-run margin was unacceptable. The Indian captain noted that the side should have never conceded 200 runs, while also noting that losing five wickets in the powerplay had left India reeling early on in the run-chase. Shreyas admitted that India had failed to execute their plans and fired a warning to his teammates, urging every player to contribute to the team in the future.
“It was atrocious, losing by that margin is not acceptable. First things first, we have to accept the loss and go back to drawing board. I don’t think it was a 200 wicket. We lost four wickets in the powerplay and that itself pushed us back. You can plan a lot but once you come to the ground you need to adapt. Try to figure out what is the right length and I felt the hard length was tough and we didn’t execute. We need to comeback strong and not dwell too much about the past. Every individual has to think and see how they can contribute to the team,” Shreyas Iyer said.
Shreyas Iyer has been a phenomenal captain in the past, having led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024, PBKS to a final in 2025, and having led Mumbai as well in the domestic circuit. However, his recent record as captain has been just miserable. In his last 12 T20s as captain, Iyer has suffered 10 losses and has only managed to win one game. One game ended as a no-result.
