South Africa will kick off their World Cup 2023 campaign by playing against Sri Lanka on Saturday (October 7). The match will be played in a newly rebuilt Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. South Africa and Sri Lanka almost scrapped through the WC by finishing eighth and seventh respectively in the ICC Points Table for WC 2023. However, both the teams go into the showpiece event as the dark horses.
Proteas, who always go into WC as favourites this time enter the WC as underdogs. After the retirements of AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Hashim Amla, and Dale Steyn, South Africa have rebuilt well. However, the tag of chokers still hangs on. On the other hand, the Lankans go into the event as dark horses. Playing the WC in India will suit their style more.
