Rohit Sharma remains ‘1st choice’ for T20 WC captaincy despite Mumbai Indians shake-up

Notably, India skipper Rohit Sharma has not played a T20I since November 10, 2022.

As the cricketing world gears up for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 set to be held in the West Indies and the USA, the big question looms over who will lead the Indian team in this prestigious tournament. While speculation arose after Rohit’s captaincy change in the IPL, recent reports confirm that Rohit Sharma is still the “first choice” to lead India in the T20 World Cup next year.

Rohit Sharma showcased exceptional leadership skills during the ODI World Cup 2023, solidifying his standing as the favorite for the T20 captaincy. However, with his recent removal from the Mumbai Indians’ captaincy, some thought Hardik Pandya might take the reins for both the IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup.

Contrary to these speculations, a BCCI official to Dainik Jagran affirmed that Rohit Sharma remains India’s captain in all formats, unaffected by Mumbai Indians’ decisions.

Despite Rohit not playing a T20I since November 10, 2022, the official confirmed that if both Rohit and Hardik are fit and available, Rohit Sharma would lead India in the T20 World Cup next year.

While there were assumptions that Rohit Sharma might lose the captaincy after Hardik’s appointment as Mumbai Indians’ captain, it appears Rohit’s illustrious tenure as India captain will persist.

Rohit Sharma-Hardik Pandya captaincy swap at Mumbai Indians to not affect Team India strategy. Rohit remains '1st choice' for T20 World Cup.

What is future of Rohit Sharma in T20I?

The focus now shifts to Rohit Sharma future in T20 cricket, with his T20I career contingent on the decisions of the national selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar and coach Rahul Dravid. Observers suggest that his performance in the IPL’s initial phase in March-April will be pivotal.

If Rohit maintains his commanding form, there’s every chance he will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the T20 format.

Amidst these developments, questions arise about the atmosphere in the Mumbai Indians dressing room, which could possible affect Indian cricket dressing room also. Cryptic social media posts from players like Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav have sparked curiosity.

However, it’s reported by Cricbuzz that the Mumbai Indians management consulted with all senior players and coaches before the official announcements about captaincy swap, maintaining a sense of understanding and empathy within the team.
