Rashid Latif picks Pakistan playing XI for T20 World Cup opener against USA, Azam Khan gets boot

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan, who had a dismal outing in the 4th T20I against England, did not find himself in Rashid's Playing XI.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif picked his playing XI for Pakistan’s opening T20 World Cup 2024 fixture. Pakistan begin their campaign against USA at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas on June 6. Latif left out wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan from his playing XI, handing the keeping gloves to veteran Mohammad Rizwan.

For the opening slot of Pakistan, Latif went with the tried and tested opening pair of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam. Usman Khan and Fakhar Zaman have been slotted in the top order.

Middle-order filled with all-rounders

Latif has incorporated Iftikhar Ahmed in the middle order to accelerate Pakistan’s scoring ability. Imad Wasim can play the dual the dual role of a pinch hitter and a left-arm orthodox spinner to aid Pakistan in both departments, according to Latif. Shadab Khan plays a similar role in Latif’s set-up, with his leg-spin making him a prized asset.

Shaheen Afridi to lead bowling attack

For the bowling attack, Latif went with three pacers in the form of Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir and Haris Rauf while leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed gets his name on the list as the 11th man.
