Ranji Trophy: No. 10 & 11 batters slam tons for Mumbai, records galore

Ranji Trophy: Tushar Kotian and Tushar Deshpande added 232 runs for the last wicket against Baroda.

Mumbai tail-enders, No. 10 & No. 11 batters, Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande created history of sorts on Tuesday, when they became only the second first-class pair in history to score centuries during an innings. The record came in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final encounter against Baroda on Tuesday.

Starting at the overnight score of 337/9, the duo of Kotian (120) and Deshpande (123) added 232 runs together for the last wicket. Meanwhile, these were maiden FC tons for both the batters.

The Prior Instance in Ranji Trophy

The only other No.10 & 11 pair to have scored a ton together in an innings was by Chandu Sarwate and Shute Banerjee, in 1946, vs Surrey for Indians at the Oval. There were a few more records that were created in this innings. As per the Indian Express, Kotian-Deshpande became third Indian pair to record a partnership of over 200 for the last wicket.

Deshpande, on the other hand, is also only the third Indian now, to score a ton at No. 11. As far as the match between Mumbai and Baroda is concerned, their innings ended at 569, setting an impossible target of 606 to the opposition.
