The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to retire the Pataudi Trophy. For the unaware, whenever the India cricket team reaches the shores of England for a Test tour, the winner of the series is awarded the Pataudi Trophy.
History of the Pataudi Trophy
The trophy was named after the Pataudi family. Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi was the only man to play international cricket for both India and England, and his son Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi is considered to be one of India’s greatest captains, leading the national team in 46 matches from 1961 to 1975.
The Pataudi Trophy came into existence in 2007, which was the 75th anniversary of the first Test match played between the two nations in 1932.
However, when England cricket team tours India for a Test series, the prize’s name is changed. Whoever emerges victorious in India is awarded the Anthony de Mello Trophy.
ECB to rename India vs England Test series
Most would know that India are travelling to England for a 5-match Test series, which commences on June 20. Therefore, the news of the ECB retiring the Pataudi Trophy makes sense. The English board has informed the Pataudi family about the change they are making.
“That is the understanding from the ECB. Apparently trophies are retired after some time,” a source told Cricbuzz.
ECB wishes to rename the India vs England Test series with the names of recent legends. An example of this might be the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which came about in 1996.
