Pakistan head coach not so confident of Babar Azam and co’s chances of winning T20 World Cup 2024

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on April 28 appointed World Cup-winning Gary Kirsten as their head coach for ODIs and T20Is, while former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie will take over that role in Test cricket.

The 2009 champions, Pakistan are gearing up for the 2024 World Cup, with new white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten acknowledging the team’s potential but stopping short of overflowing confidence. While optimistic about Pakistan’s chances, Kirsten’s remarks highlighted the need for every player’s collective effort in uplifting the team. He demands ‘meticulous’ planning in order for Pakistan to go deep in the tournament.

Kirsten expressed his excitement about the “thrilling times” for Pakistan cricket, praising the new administration and the players’ determination. However, he emphasized the importance of a collective approach, stating that the team’s triumph hinges on meticulous planning and unwavering support for one another. This cautious optimism from the coach comes despite Pakistan’s placement in Group A, which offers a seemingly favorable start against the United States. The much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals India three days later will be a true test for the team.

“These are indeed thrilling times for Pakistan cricket, with a new administration and players who are driven to deliver solid results,” Kirsten said as quoted by Cricket Pakistan. “The upcoming T20 World Cup presents a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our skills and uphold Pakistan’s legacy as a formidable force in cricket. However, success will require collective effort, meticulous planning and unwavering support for one another,” the Pakistan coach added.
