Not Rohit Sharma? Virat Kohli should open with Jaiswal at T20 World Cup, reckons ex-India star

The last time Rohit Sharma didn't open the Indian innings in a T20I was during a series against West Indies in 2022, when he gave chances to Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan

Former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer has sparked a debate about India’s batting order for the upcoming T20 World Cup with a suggestion to shake things up. Jaffer believes Virat Kohli and the young Yashasvi Jaiswal should form the opening partnership, with the experienced Rohit Sharma slotting in at number 3 or 4.

What are the stats if Kohli & Rohit swap positions?

Jaffer believes Rohit’s exceptional skills against spin bowling make him well-suited for the middle order. Statistics back this up – Rohit has a decent record at these positions, averaging nearly 40 with four fifties. Kohli, on the other hand, has found success as an opener recently, amassing a whopping 400 runs at an average exceeding 57, including a scintillating century against Afghanistan. Jaiswal adds firepower to the top with a strike rate of over 161 as an opener.

What did Wasim Jaffer say?

As per Jaffer, Kohli should open the batting at T20 World Cup 2024 for India alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. He feels Rohit’s spin-handling game is better, making him better suited in the middle order on what is expected to be sluggish conditions across the Atlantic.
