No mystery spinner Tanveer Sangha, as Australia lock in squad for World Cup 2023

No mystery spinner Tanveer Sangha, as Australia lock in squad for World Cup 2023

Apart from Tanveer Sangha, Australia have also dropped Marnus Labuschagne from ODI World Cup squad

Five-time Champions Australia are the first to finalize the squad for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. Australia trimmed the 18-member provisional squad to 15-member squad. The unlucky trio to miss the ticket to India were Tanveer Sangha, Aaron Hardie, & Nathan Ellis. Sangha, who impressed one and all on his T20I debut against South Africa was left as Australia preferred the experienced spinner Adam Zampa instead.

Pat Cummins, who is nursing an injury, will lead the side. The trio of Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc are not part of the ODI series against South Africa due to their respective injuries. However, head coach George Bailey is pretty confident that the trio are recovering well and will play the ODI series against India, preceding the World Cup

“Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Glenn Maxwell are on track in their return to play programs. All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India,” Bailey said to Cricket Australia.

“There are eight one-day matches still to play in South Africa and India before the final squad is due to be declared. They are followed by two World Cup practice games, which offers plenty of opportunity to continue the build for the tournament.”

Coming to batting, there are no surprises in Australia squad as David Warner, Steve Smith, and Travis Head will comprise batters. The trio are likely to bat at the top, followed by all-rounders Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, and Marcus Stoinis. Alex Carey and Josh Inglis are the two wicketkeepers in the squad.

Carey is the first-choice wicketkeeper, owing to his stellar form in ODIs since the last World Cup. Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, and Zampa will comprise the bowling attack. Marnus Labuschange misses the cut owing to his dismal returns in white-ball formats. T20 specialist Tim David also misses the bus, as Australia preferred Cameron Green.

Australia will play five ODIs against South Africa starting from Thursday. Later, they will travel to India to play three ODIs from September 19.
