Shreyas Iyer showcased his strength against the Australian bowlers, ultimately securing a memorable series win for India in the second ODI on Sunday. Promoted in the batting order, he delivered a remarkable innings of 105 runs from 90 deliveries. It’s worth noting that Iyer occupied the crucial No.3 position, typically reserved for Virat Kohli. After receiving the Player of the Match award in Indore, Shreyas Iyer ensured to extend a special mention to the former Indian captain, Virat Kohli.
“Glad that I was able to execute my plans perfectly today. Basically when I went in to bat, I didn’t want to complicate things. I wanted to get my eyes set, that’s how I give confidence to myself. I am flexible, ready to bat any position, whatever my team needs me to do. Virat (Kohli) is one of the greats, there’s no chance of stealing that (number 3) spot from him. I just need to keep scoring wherever (at any position) I bat,” Shreyas Iyer said at the post-match presentation.
Kohli was rested for the first two IND vs AUS matches. He is set to return to the Indian squad for the 3rd ODI scheduled for Wednesday. Like Kohli, Shreyas Iyer displayed a lively response when the Indian batter secured his third century during the decisive ODI against Australia. In the 2nd ODI, where he batted at the No.3 position for India, Iyer accumulated an impressive century by taking 39 singles. With a strike rate exceeding 116, he managed to hit 11 boundaries and three sixes.

I was seeing the matches on TV, I wanted to be out there and participate in the matches. Grateful to be believing in myself. The pain and niggles kept on coming, but I knew what I was aiming for,” Shreyas Iyer said.
