MS Dhoni’s CSK most valuable team at $122 million, Virat Kohli’s RCB placed at third

While they might not be the sole reasons for their brand values, but MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli might have significantly impacted the surge in values of IPL teams.

IPL, over the years, has grown exponentially. The money in the teams and the tournament as a whole has only multiplied, and that is visible in the kind of salaries players were offered in the IPL Auction. Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in the tournament history and was bagged for 27 Cr by LSG, while Shreyas Iyer went to PBKS for 26.75 Cr.

MS Dhoni’s CSK on Top

In short, as per Brand Finance IPL report, the mega league has seen a 13% surge in cumulative brand value — from $10.7 billion in 2023 to $12 billion in 2024. Four of the most popular teams in the IPL — CSK, MI, KKR and RCB — crossed the $100 million brand value milestone for the first time. Out of the four, MS Dhoni‘s CSK is the leader — at $122 million.

The second on the list is MI, with an overall value of $119 million. Virat Kohli’s RCB ranks third with $117 million. Having said that, IPL 2024 did a world of good to the brand value of SRH, and are now the fastest-growing team. They had an increase of 76% to reach $85 million.

Virat Kohli’s RCB Picking Up

But then, overall CSK is the team with highest growth since 2009, which could be only attributed to the popularity of Dhoni. Their brand value growth stands at 213% in 15 years. Meanwhile, RCB recorded a growth of 212% in the same time-period. Much has to do with Virat Kohli here, undoubtedly. MI experienced a growth of 185%.

Surprisingly, despite not being a top team in the IPL, PBKS also saw an upward surge of 86%. But when it comes to comparison with global teams, there is a fair way to cover for these teams. The most valuable team in the world is NFL team Dallas Cowboys at $9.2 billion.
