Michael Vaughan slanders Joe Root for poor shot selection amidst batting crisis

IND vs ENG Rajkot Test: Michael Vaughan criticises Joe Root for worthless shot selection in IND vs ENG 3rd Test

Former England star Michael Vaughan has criticised Joe Root over his poor shot selection. Joe Root has been hot waters quite recently. The star batter has been in poor touch off late. Adding more to his trouble is the way he got out in the first innings. Criticised for playing a worthless shot, Root has been facing flack after England’s humiliating 434 runs loss in the IND vs ENG Rajkot Test.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes the way they batted on day three, especially Joe Root’s shot,” Michael Vaughan wrote in The Telegraph.

Joe Root is arguably England’s best batter in their roster. But star batter has been a mere shadow of his previous form in recent times. The Fab 5 batter has managed a highest score of 29 runs in the 6 innings that he has batted so far. With England heavily banking on his batting prowess, a poor shot selection has left Michael Vaughan fuming.

“You are 230 behind on day three, thinking a brilliant bowler in Ravichandran Ashwin may play no further part in the Test, and Ravindra Jadeja is looking a bit stiff. It’s 1-1 in the series and you have your best player at the crease. From there, you can see a route to victory, and it involves batting all day and getting a lead,” Vaughan added.

Not Just Vaughan, a lot of other former cricketers and pundits have slandered Root’s poor shot. With England now 2-1 down in the series, the Three Lions will have to bank on their star batter to return to form as soon as possible.

It was no time for extravagant risks, but Root took one. I hear people say “but he played it against Pat Cummins!” and, yeah, he did. But England were on top when he did that. Here, they were 221 behind on day three in India, with the series finely poised. The time for that risk was when Root had 70-plus and they were approaching India’s total, trying to put the foot down and ask big questions. Making that error brought India to life. The reward would not even have been that great. Yes, it looks fun, but you are still at best 215 behind. Could he have not pushed that ball into the covers for a single?,” Vaughan concluded.
