Massive blow for England, Jacob Bethell ruled out of ICC Champions Trophy

Jacob Bethell has torn his left hamstring while playing the IND vs ENG 1st ODI at Nagpur

The England Cricket Team has been hit with a massive blow. Young all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy after suffering a left hamstring injury. The Englishman suffered this injury while playing in the IND vs ENG 1st ODI at Nagpur.

The 21-year-old Three Lions player suffered his hamstring injury during the first ODI match against India. He went to bat in the middle and scored 51 runs. He was not a part of the IND vs ENG 2nd ODI at Cuttack. Sky Sports revealed that a day prior to the Cuttack ODI, Bethell underwent scans on his left hamstring and found a tear on it.

This tear essentially rules him out of the ICC Champions Trophy. It is further reported that the youngster would need at least 4-6 weeks to recover from the injury. England plays their first game of the ICC Champions Trophy against Australia on 22nd February in Pakistan. Tom Banton has been called to replace Bethell for the IND vs ENG 3rd ODI at Ahmedabad.

“I’m pretty sure (Bethell) has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest. That’s really disappointing for him. Obviously, he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players. It’s a shame that injury is going to rule him out,” England captain Jos Buttler said after England’s defeat in Cuttack.

Jacob Bethell made his debut for England last September and has been a key player for the squad within this short amount of time. Replacing him for the ICC event will be a huge task for the Three Lions. Apart from a good batter, the southpaw also provides a good option in spin bowling.
