IND vs ENG 4th T20I: After a 125-run win in Nottingham, England blew India away by 9 wickets in Bristol to seal the 5-match T20I series 3-0. This was England’s maiden T20I series (except one-off matches) win over India at home or away. Harry Brook smashed an unbeaten 79-run knock off 35 balls, while Phil Salt scored 42-ball 59 to chase the 159-run target in just 13.5 overs. The two added an unbeaten 146-run stand after Arshdeep Singh removed Jos Buttler early.
India posted 158/7, all thanks to captain Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 49-ball 80-run knock in Bristol. England turned to their short ball ploy to dismiss Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan in the powerplay. Sooryavanshi fell to Jofra Archer for 15 off 10, while Kishan perished for 4 off 6 to Josh Tongue. After the powerplay, Iyer and Shivam Dube (22 off 23) rescued India with a 53-run stand. But scoring rate dipped significantly. Archer was excellent with 2/20, while Sam Curran bowled a tight spell of 0/24.
Shreyas Iyer shows the way
Opting to bat first, India needed to score at least 200 at this ground. But the conditions did not suit India’s style. It was not as easy to play shots and England applied the short ball ploy to get Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan out. With the spongy bounce on the surface, other batters fell, trying to slog almost mindlessly. There was one exception: Shreyas Iyer.
India’s captain applied his mind. He anchored when needed and slogged when he could. In fact, it was a lone-warrior effort by him in Bristol. As other batters continued to fail around him, he carried on with a 49-ball 80-run unbeaten knock. The next best score from an Indian batter was 22 off 23 by Shivam Dube. India posted just 158/7, which was never going to be enough even if India had Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya in their side.
Harry Brook punishes India
Even as England lost Jos Buttler to Arshdeep Singh in the 3rd over, Harry Brook did not bother. England captain smashed Arshdeep for a six on the second ball to show his intent, and he never let that tempo down. And he once again proved why Washington Sundar does not deserve a place in India’s T20I side, smashing him for 19 runs in his first over. With 120 runs coming in the first 10 overs, it was a mere formality.
Brook added an unbeaten 146-run stand with Phil Salt off just 70 balls, who survived a Prince Yadav yorker on a free hit. Despite taking 9 deliveries to open his account, Salt got his rhythm back soon. He let Brook take charge of the carnage, while he held the other end with an unbeaten 59-run knock. It took England just 13.5 overs to chase the target down with 9 wickets to spare.

The trouble runs deeper than any single batter. India's top order is made up almost entirely of left-handers, and England's bowlers have read it comfortably twice in a row. Shreyas Iyer is the only right-hander in the top six, and the pressure to break up that pattern is why Samson's recall is the most talked-about selection call of the tour. If he comes back, someone makes way, and Tilak Varma's own dip in form puts him in the frame despite his vice-captaincy. India may also look at Suryansh Shedge for Shivam Dube to add a right-handed option in the middle, or Washington Sundar for Axar Patel as insurance against another top-order collapse.
The bowling is a smaller worry than the batting, but not by much. Prince Yadav impressed on return with 2 for 32 at Trent Bridge, one of the few Indian performances worth keeping. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana lead the pace attack, with Varun Chakravarthy the main spin threat. The issue is that none of it matters if the batting keeps folding inside 12 overs.
