IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st ODI: After a humiliating 0-4 series loss to England in the T20I series, Team India switch to the 50-over format. While India are still in preparations for the World Cup 2027, the return of big guns, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, will boost the ailing side. Captain Shubman Gill said that the loss in the T20I series won’t have any bearing on the ODIs, and he might be right. The return of Bumrah to ODIs after 969 days will be the biggest relief, and so will the return of Kuldeep Yadav. India missed both in the T20I series, and it turned out to be disastrous.
England, fresh off their T20I dominance under Harry Brook and with Jofra Archer in fine rhythm, will not be intimidated by reputations. But India have won their last five ODIs against England, their joint-longest streak against them, so this format at least gives the visitors something solid to stand on.
IND vs ENG 1st ODI match preview
The pressure to stop the slide is real. There is also rust to shake off. Kohli missed the recent Afghanistan ODIs, Rohit did not look fully fluent in them, and the bowling has to reshape itself without Mohammed Siraj.
India’s top order suddenly looks the part again. Rohit Sharma opens with a superb Edgbaston record. Gill has been among the most dependable ODI batters in world cricket, and Kohli returns in the middle order with six fifty-plus scores in his last seven ODI innings. That is a spine most teams would envy. The questions sit lower down and in the bowling. India lean on Bumrah to lead an attack that includes Arshdeep Singh, still searching for rhythm, and the wrist-spin of Kuldeep Yadav, who could swing a game on a surface that flattens out. The all-rounder balance, with Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy absent, is another puzzle Gill has to solve, most likely with Axar Patel and one of Shivam Dube or Washington Sundar.
Despite losing six out of their last 10 ODIs, England have reasons for confidence beyond the T20Is. Joe Root anchors the batting and has been their leading ODI run-scorer since the start of 2024, Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell give them an aggressive opening pair, and Josh Tongue, so impressive with the ball in the T20Is, makes his ODI debut. The early exchanges with the new ball, where Edgbaston tends to offer the most help, could shape the whole contest.

Edgbaston pitch report
14/07/2026 14:18
Edgbaston in ODIs tends to reward bowlers early before settling into a good batting surface. There is usually enough movement and seam with the new ball to make the first ten overs a genuine contest, which is why the powerplay is so important here. Batters who see off that early threat generally find run-scoring gets much easier as the ball softens and the pitch loses its freshness.
Across 65 ODIs at the ground, teams chasing have a slight edge, winning 31 to the 27 wins for sides batting first, with the rest ending without a result. That said, the surface holds up well through an innings and does not tend to grip sharply for spinners, so wrist-spin like Kuldeep's relies more on drift and pace variation than big turn. Totals of 300-plus are gettable on a good day, and Edgbaston has seen some enormous scores, including England's 408 against New Zealand in 2015.
Given the warm, dry conditions forecast, expect a true surface where batting gets easier as the innings wears on. Winning the toss and making early inroads with the new ball will be key.
India's record at Edgbaston
14/07/2026 14:00
Edgbaston is one of the happier grounds for Indian cricket, at least in the fifty-over format. India have played 12 ODIs here and won eight of them, losing only four. That is a strong return at a ground where their Test record was dismal for decades until the 336-run win in 2025. The white-ball memories are far kinder.
One note of caution, though: Edgbaston has been a fortress for England in recent ODIs, with seven straight wins at the venue stretching back to 2015. So India's healthy overall record sits alongside a recent English stranglehold that the visitors will want to break on Tuesday.
