Lungi Ngidi done for the day; stretched off the field

Worrying scenes in Delhi as Lungi Ngidi went down hard after mistiming a catch attempt. He backpedalled, missed it completely, and landed awkwardly on his head on the rock-hard Kotla outfield. The physio and doctor rushed in, stretcher out. He’s responsive but is ruled out of today's match.

Tough for KL in Delhi's heat

Rahul needed the physio for heat exhaustion but pushed on, while Punjab came out firing. Priyansh and Prabhsimran smashed Mukesh for 21 in the 2nd over, including a gift full-toss six, racing to 36/0 chasing 229. 

What a start! 

A six to start the run-chase as Priyansh Arya punishes a loose delivery by Auqib Nabi, who has come as an impact sub for Nissanka. However, Nabi bowled the rest of the over well before getting hit for another one on the last ball.

The starting required run rate for Punjab is over 13, and they have started the chase with a 15-run over. So, that's a plus as Prabhsimran also smashed his first ball out of the park.

The Delhi crowd have been thoroughly entertained as they braved heatwaves in the national capital. KL Rahul bossed the innings with an insane knock of 152* off 67. He has become the first Indian to score 150+ in IPL history. Strike rate of 227, silencing his critics with one of the best IPL innings ever.

A masterclass by the former PBKS captain, who sent the visitors on a leather hunt. Utter domination as Punjab rues Shashank Singh's early drop in the 3rd over to give Rahul a reprieve. Carnage from Rahul's bat, who also stitched the second-highest IPL partnership of 220 runs with Nitish Rana. Rana was superb in his own right but was outshone by Rahul's daddy hundred.

While he was in the shadows of KL Rahul's mayhem, it was Nitish Rana's 28-run over vs Bartlett that broke the door of utter chaos. Now, the southpaw started to go again as he smashed the same bowler for a six and a four to enter the 90s. However, a harmless full-toss proved to be his final call. A deserving century was left 9 runs away from him.

Shashank Singh would be kicking himself for dropping a sitter when he was early in the innings. Arshdeep Singh had him, but the drop catch meant that the Delhi Capitals (DC) superstar has smashed a mind-blowing century, that too in just 48 balls. Elegance, pristine timing, ruthlessness, acceleration and Rahul has given the Arun Jaitley crowd something worth remembering in this scorching heat.

Top, top stuff for Rahul, who has surpassed MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina as IPL's 5th-highest run-getter.

Shreyas Iyer brought in his best pacer, Arshdeep, who endured a brutal 14th over, leaking 20 runs as Rahul tore into him. He started with an inventive lap for four, then smoked a flat-batted six and two more boundaries to race into the 90s. Rana rotated the strike with a single.

DC moved to 173/1, with Rahul 92 off 44 and Rana is 72 off 36, their 140* stand now PBKS’s highest second-wicket partnership conceded in IPL history.

Expensive over from Vijaykumar Vyshak as Delhi Capitals raced to 61/1. Nitish Rana struck back-to-back fours through cover and square drive, helped again by Shashank Singh’s misfield. The lad is having a poor outing on the field. After a single, KL Rahul finished with a six, pulling a full toss over fine leg. 16 came off it, with Rahul unbeaten on 30 (12 balls) and Rana on 20.

A simple catch dropped by Shashank!

KL Rahul gets a massive reprieve. Arshdeep Singh bowls one short, and Rahul sends it straight to the square leg fielder's throat. Shashank goes for a reverse cup but spills it. Arshdeep started to celebrate but stopped midway. Massive drop for PBKS. 

However, that didn't allow DC to go unscathed as Nissanka is now caught off Arshdeep, who gets a wicket that he deserved. Nitish Rana is the new batter in.  

Arshdeep’s extra bounce deceived Nissanka’s pull, producing a top edge that Prabhsimran caught comfortably. Nissanka fell for 11. However, KL Rahul (23* off 10) finished the over with a superb six.

With DC opting to bat first, KL Rahul has a great chance to climb up the ladder as far as the highest run-scorer in the IPL is concerned. He just needs 13 more runs to surpass MS Dhoni's tally. Against his old franchise, PBKS, Rahul can become the sixth-highest run-getter in IPL history.

Delhi, on the other hand, have started to come apart slightly. A 47-run defeat to SRH, with the bowling looking toothless in the absence of Mitchell Starc. The Australian has joined the camp but isn't expected to play, and Rehan Ahmed has come in for Ben Duckett. DC's batting concerns are real: KL Rahul, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi have all looked good in patches but never as a unit. Pathum Nissanka's flashy start hasn't translated into consistency.

DC need a comprehensive show from all their players as a unit to beat Punjab Kings. Else, their campaign will only go south. 

Punjab Kings are doing something we haven't seen from them in a long time, winning everything. Five wins from five completed matches, plus a point from a washout, have them on 11 points and an NRR of +1.420 at the top of the IPL 2026 Points Table. The batting has been the headline act. Cooper Connolly is averaging 56 with a strike rate of 164, Priyansh Arya has scored 211 runs with a strike rate of 248.23, Prabhsimran Singh has 211 runs at SR 172, and Shreyas Iyer is going at 183. 

Their 254/7 against LSG last week is the highest team total of IPL 2026 so far. There aren't many holes to point at.

In two matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in IPL 2026, there have been two sorts of games. In one, batters dominated and in the other, bowlers. It will depend on which pitch is in use for the DC vs PBKS clash. 

The venue is normally a batter's playground with short boundaries, a fast outfield, and true bounce. But in the two games played here this season, the pitch has shown more nuance than that. 

That said, the fundamentals haven't changed. It's still a high-scoring venue, and bowling first is still the preferred call. Batting under lights gets easier, and a side batting first will likely need to post 220 to feel safe. Daytime temperatures are expected to push 42°C in Delhi, which will make the toss-winning captain's life much easier if they're bowling first.

For PBKS, the spin angle is where this gets interesting. They've leaned heavily on Yuzvendra Chahal in big moments, and a wicket that's already gripped for Axar and Kuldeep should suit him just fine.

Few rivalries are this neatly balanced. Across 34 IPL meetings, Delhi Capitals have a slight edge over Punjab Kings with 18 wins, including a Super Over one in 2020. Punjab have won 16.

Like their overall head-to-head record, Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals share the same fate at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Both teams have won six and lost six.
