Liton Das named Bangladesh T20I captain before India series, will lead in T20 World Cup 2026

Liton Das has captained Bangladesh in all formats and has lost just 4 of the 11 matches as skipper.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named Liton Das as the Bangladesh cricket team T20I captain. The 30-year-old will lead the Tigers until the T20 World Cup 2026. Liton wasn’t in the scheme of things in ODI cricket and wasn’t even selected for the Champions Trophy 2025.

Liton Das to lead Bangladesh in T20Is

But he was a mainstay in the T20I team. After Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down as captain earlier in the year, the BCB has decided to hand Liton the responsibility. All-rounder Mahedi Hasan has been named deputy to Liton.

Bangladesh T20I squad for UAE series

Bangladesh hasn’t played a single T20I match in 2025, and Liton’s first assignment would be leading the Tigers against UAE later this month for a 2-match series. Bangladesh will then play a 5-match T20I series against Pakistan from May 25 to June 3. But Liton’s biggest challenge will be against India. The Men in Blue are set to tour Bangladesh in August. It’ll be the first time India will play a T20I series on Bangladesh soil.

Future of India vs Bangladesh series, uncertain

However, the future of that tour still hangs in the balance. Recently retired Major General ALM Fazlur Rahman, who’s part of Bangladesh’s government, made some inflammatory comments against India. This has created some tension between the two countries.

Therefore, the Indian government can inform the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to not tour Bangladesh for the white-ball series.
