Jetlag, rainy weather worry New Zealand head coach Gary Stead ahead of Black Caps’ T20 World Cup opener

New Zealand gave some time-off to cricketers who were involved in the late stages of the Indian Super League and only got their full squad on Sunday.

New Zealand players are trying to cope with jetlag and the change in timezone upon their arrival in West Indies, head coach Gary Stead has revealed. However, Stead counted the positives and said since New Zealand do not open their T20 World Cup campaign until Saturday, players will get the time to adapt to the change.

Jetlag poses major challenge for New Zealand ahead of T20 World Cup opener

You don’t always get ideal [situations] when people are coming from all over the world. And one of the things we have found here is jetlag probably hits you a little bit hard. I know a number of people have been up in the middle of the night, which isn’t great for your preparation, but thankfully we have enough time leading in being the 14th game of the tournament that guys can sort that out,” Stead said.

New Zealand gave some time-off to cricketers who were involved in the late stages of the Indian Premier League. They only got their full squad on Sunday with the arrival of Lockie Ferguson and Trent Boult.

West Indies weather a matter of concern

Stead also voiced his concern over the weather.

Looks like the weather bomb that was hitting here has passed us by. It’s definitely somewhat of a concern that in such a quick period of time of pool play that you want to play every match you can,” Stead said.

New Zealand are just two out of the 20 teams who did not play a warm-up match before the T20 World Cup 2024. They begin their campaign against Afghanistan at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 8.
