Jasprit Bumrah will go down in the history books as perhaps the greatest Indian all-format bowler. He’s unplayable most of the time, and you have to acknowledge the greatness of the man. But on some occasions, he comes up with something extraordinary with the bat too.
An extra spice of batsmanship enters into him whenever he plays in England. You remember the iconic over he faced from Stuart Broad when he broke all the records, smashing him for 35 runs in a Test match in an over. Now, Bumrah has done something similar. Not the same in terms of runs, but the entertainment factor was there. In the second ODI against England in Cardiff, Bumrah hammered Saqib Mahmood for 18 runs, including three boundaries and a six. No wonder he has more international runs in England (164) than in India (141)!
Broad to Mahmood against Bumrah’s sword
India were in a spot of bother when Bumrah walked out to bat in Cardiff. With wickets tumbling around Shreyas Iyer, the visitors needed someone to throw a few punches and push the score towards respectability. Enter Bumrah. Saqib Mahmood probably expected a simple over against India’s No. 10. Instead, he was treated to a reminder that Bumrah can be surprisingly dangerous when he decides to swing freely.
The over started with a crisp whip through mid-wicket for a four. A couple of balls later, Bumrah top-edged a pull over the wicketkeeper for another boundary. Mahmood then dug one into the pitch, but Bumrah muscled it through mid-wicket for four more before finishing the over in style with a towering pull over deep square leg for six. Eighteen runs came from the over, and the Cardiff crowd responded with chants of “Boom Boom Bumrah.”
For those who know, it instantly brought back memories of Edgbaston in 2022 when Bumrah turned Stuart Broad’s over into a piece of cricket folklore. Leading India in the rescheduled Test, Bumrah smashed Broad for 35 runs in a single over, still the most expensive over in Test cricket history.
That over had everything: boundaries, a six, wides, a no-ball and complete chaos. Broad had a forgetabble day then but Bumrah entered the history books, this time as a batter.
