The Mumbai Indians (MI) have won the toss and opted to bowl first against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 58th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium. Since Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav were unavailable for selection, Jasprit Bumrah came out for the toss in Dharamshala, making his IPL and MI captaincy debut.
Why did MI choose to bowl first?
Bumrah cited the previous match in Dharamshala as the reason behind chasing. Delhi Capitals had hunted down 216 with relative ease, and Mumbai will look to do the same. Suryakumar hasn’t travelled with the team, and Allah Ghazanfar isn’t available either. Sherfane Rutherford and Shardul Thakur replace them.
“We’ll bowl first. In the last game, the cold weather coming down the wicket will settle down. Suryakumar is not here for personal reasons, and Allah is not there as well,” Bumrah said after winning the toss.
Spin to come into play?
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer has added Harpreet Brar, a left-arm orthodox spinner, to the mix. He expects the pitch to aid spinners a bit more. To improve their bowling, Azmatullah Omarzai and Xavier Bartlett have been added, with Marcus Stoinis, Ben Dwarshius, and Yash Thakur going out.
“We would have bowled first as well. The wicket looks a bit drier. Still not sure how the pitch will play. Harpreet, Bartlett, and Azma come in,” Shreyas told Murali Karthik.

Winning or losing the toss in Dharamshala doesn’t really impact the outcome of the match. Altitude and the true nature of the surface mean chasing teams don’t have an advantage either.
