Shubman Gill pays the price for stoppages in GT vs DC clash, fined for slow-over rate

Shubman Gill became 7th captain in IPL 2025 to be fined for slow over rate.

Shubman Gill has joined six other captains in IPL 2025 to be fined for a slow over rate. With the GT vs DC clash ending way past the stipulated time, Shubman received Rs 12 lakh fine as per Article 2.22 of IPL’s Code of Conduct. Gujarat Titans bowled first in the sweltering heat of Ahmedabad. With the temperature touching 41 degrees Celsius, cramps and dehydration were frequent. However, despite poor scheduling by IPL, Shubman was the one to pay the price.

“Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 35 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gill was fined INR 12 lakhs,” IPL said in a press release.

However, unlike IPL 2024, a captain won’t be suspended for a slow over rate. Instead, repeated offences will only lead to hefty fines and demerit points.

Players struggle in Ahmedabad heat

Ishant Sharma became a meme after going off the field. The Gujarat Titans pacer was struggling in the heat and was dehydrated. After bowling his first over, he left the field with physios rushing in with electrolytes and towels.

Soon, Axar Patel suffered cramps. Mohammed Siraj rushed in to help while Prasidh Krishna also suffered cramps. During the chase, even though the temperature went down, Jos Buttler suffered a similar fate. Even the on-field umpires, in black jerseys, struggled to stand in the sun. However, there were no additional water breaks.
