With the clock ticking over the squad announcement for the Australia series, India are sweating over Axar Patel’s fitness. The all-rounder is ruled out of the Asia Cup final due to suffering an injury in left quadriceps. It is still not clear whether the southpaw’s injury is a serious one. As per reports Axar is likely to miss 2 IND vs AUS matches with his wrist and hamstring injuries.
“Axar… I’m not sure. You know he had a small tear. Looks like maybe a week or 10 days, I don’t know,” Rohit said. “We just have to wait and see how that injury progresses. Because every individual is different, some guys recover quickly. I’m hoping with Axar that’s the case. We’ll wait and see what happens with him. I’m not too sure whether he’ll be okay to play against Australia in the first two games at home. But we’ll wait and see.”
With the ODI series against Australia set to begin on September 22, Axar’s fitness will be monitored in time to time-to-time basis. The all-rounder is crucial in the 50-over scheme of things. Axar’s batting has seen him edge other off-spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar. Axar’s handy skills lower down the order against Bangladesh in the recent Super 4 clash evidenced his batting prowess.
“Axar Patel has been ruled out of the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka due to a left quadriceps strain sustained during India’s Super Four match against Bangladesh on Friday. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Washington Sundar as a replacement. The all-rounder arrived in Colombo this evening (Saturday) and has joined the squad,” BCCI said in a statement on September 16.

Axar is also selected in the World Cup squad, along with other spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.
BCCI soon to name squad for Australia ODI series, Axar Patel doubtful, Washington Sundar likely to be named in the side
Sundar has replaced Axar Patel in the squad for the Asia Cup Final and is now expected to replace Axar for the Australia series if he is ruled out. Sundar last featured in the ODI series against Bangladesh late last year.
The southpaw later was ruled out of the home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. However, Axar’s untimely injury has given Sundar a golden chance to cement his place in the team as the third spinner.
