Bumrah’s workload not a concern in Shami’s absence, says Irfan Pathan

Jasprit Bumrah has missed two years of international cricket with long-term injuries. In the recent one, he missed 11 months of cricket with a lower back stress fracture.

Five Tests, potentially 250 overs of bowling in the India vs England Test series for Jasprit Bumrah. And that has sent warning bells ringing ahead of IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup 2024 considering the history of injuries he has had. With Mohammed Shami absent, he is the pace spearhead in IND vs ENG Test series. However, Irfan Pathan believes absence of Shami won’t increase Bumrah’s workload.

Jasprit Bumrah returned after almost a year-long lay-off following a recurrence of lower back stress fracture. He missed the T20 World Cup and WTC Final apart from IPL. But former India pacer Irfan Pathan believes Bumrah is in much better shape in terms of fitness.

“Obviously, Shami’s absence does have an effect but that does not mean chances of injury will increase for Bumrah. His action is absolutely perfect now,” Irfan Pathan told PTI TV.

Jasprit Bumrah wokload

Bumrah had to undergo a surgery in New Zealand following his injury. He finally made a return in the T20 series against Ireland in the lead up to ODI World Cup.

But with Mohammed Siraj ineffective in Hyderabad, Jasprit Bumrah had to bowl 24.4 overs in the IND vs ENG 1st Test. That spinners had to share the bulk of responsibility helped Bumrah manage his workload.

However, that won’t be the case in the remaining four matches. With no Mohd Shami, the pressure will be on Bumrah.

“When there is pressure from both sides, whether it is Shami taking wickets from one side or Bumrah working quietly from one side. Bumrah is taking wickets and Shami is working quietly, their partnership not only reduces the pressure on each other but also augurs well for the team,” Irfan Pathan said.

Bumrah the key in IND vs ENG

Despite spin-friendly conditions, Jasprit Bumrah delivered the goods. In fact, he was the only pacer to take wickets in the match.

In the first innings, Bumrah bagged two wickets in 8.3 overs and then scalped four in the second innings in 16.1 overs.

Irfan Pathan is impressed with Bumrah’s attitude and his dedication to Test cricket.

“I have been a big fan of Jasprit Bumrah’s attitude, especially in Test cricket, the way he has given priority to Test cricket despite injuries. Even if he gets injured, I will salute him because he is trying his best. We all have to always keep this in mind,” Irfan Pathan said.
