“Nothing is final yet. We are exploring multiple options. Rahul is very much in our plans. But there is a workload on him too. Our entire focus shifts to World Cup at home. The message to everyone is clear, we have to win the World Cup. So, for obvious reasons, the focus is not on T20s at the moment. There are a lot of discussions going on. But for a final decision, CAC and the selectors have to be involved. And it will take a little while,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

India to rehire foreign coach? Since Duncan Fletcher in 2025, India have not looked at foreign coaches. However, with the changing nature of T20 cricket, BCCI is open to exploring the idea.
“Yes, why not. Look where England are now in Tests. McCullum has changed the face of Test cricket. If we can have a foreign coach who actually fits into our principles. Why not? But at the moment, Rahul Dravid is our coach and all the discussions and everything are just assumptions,” the official said.

Why do India need a fresh approach in T20? –
- Since the inception of IPL, India have not won the T20 WC trophy.
- With a lot of talent coming through IPL, the trophy has been a surprising absence.
- Currently, India have a large pool of players available in T20s.
- However, India’s orthodox approach has been the biggest deterrent.
- Instead of trusting new players and promoting domestic talents, India have stuck to tried-and-tested veterans.
- But with T20 World Cup 2022 disappointment, India want a new approach in coaching.
- Furthermore, with the amount of cricket increasing, Dravid has a lot on his plate at the moment.
Both Ravi Shastri & Harbhajan Singh had earlier suggested that India should have a separate coach & captain for T20 SET-UP.
“Someone who has played the game more recently is better suited for the coaching job in T20s. I am not saying you remove Rahul from T20. Ashish and Rahul can work together to build this team for the 2024 World Cup,” Harbhajan recently told PTI.
“I think for T20 cricket, there’s no harm in having a new captain, new coach because the volume of cricket is such that for one person to play or manage all three formats of the game is never going to be easy,” Shastri was quoted during recent virtual news conference.
