“There was no discussion regarding other options. We were absolutely clear on Rohit Sharma. There is no problem with Rohit. It will be very important to have him fit. We will be in discussion with him regarding that. We have to groom a captain under him. Rohit will be the permanent captain. But we will be rotating the squad depending on the series,” Chetan Sharma said at a virtual press conference on Saturday.

“As far as Rohit Sharma is concerned, he is the number one cricketer of our country, he is playing all three formats of the game. The important thing is how we manage Rohit, cricketers manage their bodies. From time to time we will be in discussion with Rohit. If such a big cricketer is leading the country, we as selection committee want to groom further captains, and grooming them under Rohit will be tremendous,” said Chetan Sharma.
While Rohit’s age could be a factor, Chetan Sharma said as long as he stays fit and, age will not be a bar.

“It is hard to predict what problems can arise in the future, Rohit is fit and fine right now. We will give rest to every cricketer of ours, we want to give them proper rest. A body requires rest, we will see how things pan out and we will decide how will be getting the rest,” he added.
The other big news was Jasprit Bumrah’s elevation to Test vice-captaincy despite Rishabh Pant’s presence in Test. With KL Rahul unavailable due to injury, Jasprit Bumrah will be the vice-captain for the three-match T20 series and two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
“This series, Jasprit Bumrah will be vice-captain. We are keeping KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant under Rohit to be groomed for a leadership role in the future,” Chetan Sharma said.

Jadeja is absolutely fit. We do miss him a lot.
On Hardik Pandya:
Definitely, Hardik was an important part of the team. But until and unless he is 100% fit and bowling, we will not consider him. We asked him to play Ranji. It is up to the state team and him.

Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha
