On a comeback trail, Dinesh Karthik has already shown glimpses of his brilliant form. But on Friday, one of the best innings in India colours. India struggled to score more than a run a ball when Dinesh Karthik came in. But he delivered.
He was in the same element as he was 16 years ago when he scored 28-ball 31 against the same opponent. With Ajit Agarkar and Graeme Smith watching from the commentary box, he delivered with a 27-ball 55. It included nine fours and two sixes as he took the attack to South Africa. Interestingly, both Agarkar and Smith played the inaugural T20 back in 2006.
Dinesh Karthik makes a statement with quickfire 55 –
- Having come to bat at 6 Dinesh Karthik wasted no time to make an impact in the match as he set the tone from the first ball.
- The Tamil Nadu player scored 55 runs in 27 balls with a strike rate in excess of 200 in the match.
- Karthik’s innings consisted of two sixes and nine fours as he was smashing the ball all around the ground.
- Dwaine Pretorius eventually scalped him in the final over as he made sure India reached 169 runs in their innings.

After innings Karthik said, “With how India were placed at 10 overs, it was important in the scheme of things, so I was very happy with what we did today. I believed that we could get 80-85 in the last 7 overs. I was thinking how to do it.
“You got to capitalize on certain overs, take some risks. Risks are something you need to accept and absorb in T20 cricket, so I was trying to weigh my options and figure out what to do.”

16 years of wait comes to an end- It took 16 years for Dinesh Karthik to record his first fifty for the Indian team on the international stage. He was part of the Indian team that played against the South Africa team in December 2006. India won that match, while he is still a survivor from that team.
- Dinesh Karthik scored 31 runs for India as they won by 6 wickets
- The T20I also has special recognition as this was the only time Sachin Tendulkar played a T20 international.

Oldest Indian player to score a fifty in T20I-
Meanwhile, Karthik also broke a massive MS Dhoni record to become the oldest Indian player to slam a T20I half-century. At 36 he has now surpassed Dhoni to add another feather to his cap.

Rahul Dravid who was the captain of the Indian side in the 2006 South Africa tour is now the head coach of the Indian side. So this comes as a special achievement for Dinesh Karthik from where he was and where he has come.

Dinesh Karthik targets a place in the T20 World Cup squad-
- The statement innings by Karthik has seen him emerge as one of the favourites to clinch a place in the Indian side for the T20 World Cup.
- If he does continue to impress it will be hard for the selectors to ignore him.
- In the entire IPL 2022 campaign he was one of the brightest stars for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as they made it to the Qualifier 2.
- At 36 Karthik could still be a huge difference-maker for the Indian side in time to come.
