IND vs NZ LIVE: Stubborn captain’s insane experiments cost India dearly, too many changes in batting order leads the FLOP SHOW
Virat Kohli will have a host of questions to address after Team India suffered yet another collapse against New Zealand on Sunday. The Indian captain experimented with the top order, despite the numbers backing otherwise in a game that is crucial to India’s chances at the T20 World Cup. Ishan Kishan was sent out to open the batting along with KL Rahul, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Koli himself each dropped one place down in the batting order. The move did not pay many dividends as the top four fell cheaply, endangering the Men in Blue’s chances of putting a fighting total on the board.

Murali Kartik said, “Just a touch surprised that Ishan’s opening partner is not Rohit Sharma for me. I actually am taken aback because of the fact he has been a great white-ball player. Yes, KL Rahul, he has been in the form of his life, maybe he would have had to make that adjustment and bat at No. 4. Rohit Sharma is a very good player of spin but once he is set against seamer.”

1. Why send inexperienced Ishan Kishan to open?

IND vs NZ LIVE: Ishan Kishan experiment fails big time, gamble of making him open at expense of Rohit Sharma fails

India brought in Ishan Kishan into the side, and Virat Kohli straight away put him in the line of fire, pitting him against the likes of Trent Boult and Tim Southee with the new ball. The Mumbai Indians star has played just three T20Is before the T20 World Cup, and the 23-year-old looked out of touch, before holding out in the deep after scoring just four.

2. Why neglect Rohit Sharma’s excellent record as opener?

Rohit Sharma was surprisingly shifted to the middle order to accommodate Ishan Kishan at the top of the order. The Hit-Man came into bat at 3 and failed to get going, before holding out off Ish Sodhi in the deep. Rohit Sharma scored a run-a-ball 14 before perishing, further adding to India’s problems. Rohit’s numbers in the middle order are a far cry from those at the top of the order, where he has scored four international hundreds.

3. Why not use KL Rahul’s experience in middle-order?

Kl Rahul retained his place at the top of the order, while Rohit Sharma was shunted down to No.3. Rahul has a stellar record batting in the middle order in the past and has played in the middle order for the Men in Blue and in the IPL in the past, having recent experience of playing that role. Retaining him at the top of the order, while demoting Rohit Sharma and himself was a decision by Virat that raised a few eyebrows from the fans.
