Murali Karthik shocked with Rohit Sharma being dropped as opener: Speaking on air for the official broadcasters, former India spinner Murali Karthik said he was surprised by Rohit Sharma not opening the batting for India against New Zealand on Sunday.

"Just a touch surprised that his (Ishan's) opening partner is not Rohit Sharma for me. I actually am taken aback because of the fact he has been a great white-ball player. Yes, KL Rahul, he has been in the form of his life, maybe he would have had to make that adjustment and bat at No. 4," Karthik said.

"Rohit Sharma is a very good player of spin but once he is set against seamer," Karthik said when asked whether he thought the Indian team management held back Rohit to attack the New Zealand spinners.

Notably, Rahul has batted at No.4 in the past and he bats in the middle for the Indian ODI team as well.

India's move to send Ishan Kishan at the top did not work as expected as the young wicketkeeper-batsman fell to Ishan Kishan in the 3rd over of the match bowled by Trent Boult.

Rohit Sharma walked in at No. 3 and had an early escape as he pulled a Boult bouncer straight to Adam Milne at the deep fine leg but the New Zealand pacer dropped the costly catch.
